The 2026 format, explained

48 teams, 12 groups

For the first time in World Cup history, 48 nations compete across 12 groups of 4. The top two from each group advance automatically.

Best third-placed sides advance

The 8 best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also qualify for the Round of 32, giving every team a fighting chance even after an early stumble.

Standard points system

3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. Tiebreakers: goal difference → goals scored → head-to-head → fair play.
